[AUSTIN to WILLIAMS]

Mexico 15 April 1835

Dear Sir.

I am still here, a prisoner on bail- nothing has taken place in my situation since the 25 day of December, when I was released from close confinement on bail- I make no calculations when I shall leave or whether I shall return by land or water- The legislature al l\1onclova has involved mailers in a beautiful Langle by the cursed law authorizing the Gov. to dispose of 400 leagues of land as he pleases. I fear this law will create much more discontent in Texas than anything which has happened- nothing could have Le,:n more imprudent- lL will produce restrictions and in short everything bad that can be imagined- The senator of lhal State is a faithful defender of his stale and a firm one, but all he gains or can gain by trying lo defend such a measure as this, is lo ruin himsdf in public opinion here and loose all influence ] hope they have had sense enough al Monclova lo take no part: in the civil war that seems lo be commencing- Kt'-ep oul of such things- J f Ourslc and Carbajal vol1•d for the 400 !,·ague law-Lcll Lhem lo remember what kind of constituents tlu~y havr and lo be more caulious in future,- That law will cau:-w di:-contenl in Texas. Gen. Santana leaves in Lhn·,: days for the int,·rior (Zacalccas) lw informed me ycst,~rday that he should vi~it T,·xa:c- and take me with him, after Lhes,· olh<'r mailers are Si'll lt'tl- Ile i:-
