As you arc in a siluation Lo hear much, I hope as a friend you will inform me of any thing LhaL is of imporlance towards effecling Lhe main object, which is union and concerl- I believe you know and understand the principles that have always influenced me- I was in times pasl opposed lo mixing war measures with our affairs- We were then al peace, and a calm was all imporlant lo drawing emigration lo the country- Al that time no important fundamenLal or permanent right or principle was allacked- · I was therefore for peace in full. No half way measures- I acquiesced in some but reluctantly as is well known. I was abused very much for so doing- but I never attributed corrupt motives lo those who differed with me in opinion-Now Our position is quile different-our all is at stake- It is even a question of life or death "to be, or not to be"- I now believe that our rights are attacked-and that war is our only remidy- I am therefore for War in full, and no half way measures- There was, as you know helter than I do, great divisions; and that il required some prudence to unite so many discordant materials- have done al.I I could- I have not suffered the past lo have any influence upon me as to any person whatever- I do think that this same rule ought Lo govern every one- we are now all uniled, but anything like Party or inLolerance will create new divisions- There ought to be no division in the ranks of those who arc fighting for the same cause Even personalities should be laid 011 one side- it is a sacrifice which each one owes to the country- l know not whether any still exist againsl me, perhaps you can inform me-I find all my private affairs al loose ends- The trip lo i\lcxico has involved me very much in debt, but there arc other claims which I did not expect and which are incorrect- While I nm laboring away my life lo serve the public, all al my own expense I find that I am only entangling myself in debt and trouble- ii is discouraging- I must raise money- if any can be raised by Lhc sale of lots al that place let me know- l must makt~ some money in some way, t'Vt~n to pay my dayly expenses which are vt~ry small .is lo my own
