New Orleans, September 17, 1835 Sir: I had the honor to receive, late last night, your communication of yesterday relative lo the arrest and detention of the officers and crew of the vessel "El Correo de Mexico," staled by you to be a Mexican vessel of war, brought into this porl by the commander of the American schooner San Felipe. As the cause of the detention does not appear to have been known to you at the date of your communication, allow me lo state for your information, that an affidavit has been made by Captain Hurd, of the San Felipe, before Mr. Justic Preval, of this city, charging in substance, that Captain Thomas M. Thompson, commander of the "El Correo de Mexico," having under his authority the other persons in custody as the crew thereof, did, on or about the 1st of September, 1835, by open force, violently and
