New Orleans, September 16, 1835. Sir: I have just been informed that the Mexican armed schooner "El Correo de Mexico," has been brought into this port by the captain of the American schooner "San Felipe," and that the officers and crew of the vessel captured are confined as prisoners by the said captain; although I have not yet learned that any authority had been given by the American Government which could serve as a pretext for the detention of the ·'Correo" and of those who were on board. Without entering into the merits of the complaints which may be urged against Captain Thompson by the captain of the San Felipe, ] consider it my duty, as Mexican consul, lo address to you, sir, as district attorney of the United States for the eastern district of Louisiana, my complaint on account of the outrage committed against the .Mexican flag by a citizen of the United States, and lo demand, in the munc of my
