San Felipe August 3 I~t lB3:'i-
My dear fri1~nd -
I have nol writ ten lo you in some lime - why'~ Because I had nolltin~ lo comnrnnicalc, hul what l was ashamed of - My cou11lryme11 (some of them) seemed likely lo submit lo a ~·Jililary guvcrnmcnl & military usurpaliun. Those who assumed for a moment the direclion of affairs, mistook the clamors of the people againsl Williams's land speculation for a disposition lo make an unqualified submission Lu Despotism. They accordingly corresponded with the ~lililary & have atlcmplecl to execute orders emanating from the Military- They have been sadly disappointed. The sacrifice was loo greal for Lhe people. A reaclion has Lakcn place & the Mexican party arc as weak & conlempliLle as Lhey were in the laller part of 1832. They have tried lo sLifle the voice of the people!. Bui the people are clelcrmined Lo be heard. They arc clcclari11g for a general convention in all parts of the country & are clelerminecl lo submit lo no impositions nor cliclalions. 1 send you enclosed, a copy of the Culumhia Resolutions & those of San Felipe. Washington has a large meeting today which will declare for convention. Coles' Setllemenl is for convention- La Baca, Matagorda & indeed every point we can now hear from - you have no doubt ere this seen the resolu lions of Matagorda in favor of convention. The latest news from the Interior is rather menacing. I believe they arc determined lo make the experiment of garrisoning the towns of Texas & forcing the people lo submit to Centralism & Despotism. It is a lime to be on the qui vive. Lcl us act on the defensive entirely. If we arc encroached upon, let us resist until our bodies & our pr.opcrly lie in one common ruin, ere wc submit tu tyranny. We have sworn lo support a federal republican govt. nol a military usurpation-Republicanism nol Centralism, which is but another name fur Monarchy. The people are becoming united, more & more every day & I think i11 a month more, there will b,~ no division al all. I hope you are with us. I hope the country will rccciv,~Lh1! bcndil of your valuable services in the convention. Prcs,~nt me kindl)' tu i\lrs. Burnet, & be crood enotwh lo " t:'
