These facts wilh the outrageous conduct of lhc Commandant now al San Antonio (Col. Sondcy) calls loudly for immediate steps lo be taken for our preservation. Nacogdoches (Texas), 29th August 1835 To the Citizens of Texas:- From reports which have reached me I am induced to believe that our situation is unsafe; some Cherokees with the native CastiUians, have returned lo the Cherokee village from Matamoras, and say Lhal lhc Indians of the prairies and a Mexican force, are about to allack this portion of Texas; the counties of San Augustine, Sabine, Tcnahaw and Bevil, as well as Nacogdoches, will forthwith organize the Militia of each county. The following requisitions arc made to sustain lhe United Stales forces, unlit reinforcements can arrive al this place from General Gaines, viz: sixty-four from San Augustine, fifty-six from Tenahaw, fifty-six from Sabine, and Lhirly-threc from Bevil. The troops will repair to this place with the least possible delay, and report to Lhe commanding General as soon as they arrive. This call is made through the Judges of lhc several counties, and they musl be regarded as lhc law of lhc land; the troops will be detained only a few days; so soon as General Gaines can send reinforcements lo this place !hey will he discharged. Let arms and ammunition be brought, al least one hundred rounds is requested. The commanclcr-in-ehicf will he with the freemen of Texas if lhcy have to meet an enemy; all the men in Texas must have their arms in order: lo have liberty we must bt• watchful.
