Jan. 1 1835 to Sep. 30 1835 - PTR, Vol. 1

This opinion seemed for a lime lo deprive many well mea11i11:,! people of their reason and caused them lo commit many acls which Ll1ey under olher circumstances would never have done. The friendship which has existed helween us and your known ind11lg,~nce to your friends has induced me to point out lo you a course which J as well as many of my friends are sanguine will be l.he hcsL course Lo adopt. I believe lhaL nothing that would produce more excilemcnl or produce more disalifaclion than Lhe stationin~ of large bodies of Troops in the Colony and 1 am firmly of lhc opinion if you were to come in among us and explain to the people the object and intention of Lhe Govt. and colleclory men lo come and take this station thal they would now mecl wilh no opposition. 1t might be well lo have a few men al each Custom house for Lhe purpose of a guard and I am certain the people when called upon would go in support of it. I hope you have no apprehension of any personal injury and this I say upon Lhe authority of some of the most influential men in the country and be assured this will do more towards <p1ieting the people than any thing thal can be done.
