Commandancy General and lnspcccion of the Interior States of I he East

The Supreme Government of the Republic and this com- mandancy General have at all time.s made a dislinclion between those Tcxians who are fauthful to their oaths and to the Laws, and the fail hlcss adventurers who have nothing lo risquc in a rcvolucion and who occupy themselves only in disturbing public order and misleading and perverting the incautious. The scandalous atlack upon Anahuac, criminal in every point of view, did indeed crca1e for a moment a doubt of the loyalty of the inhabitants of Texas lo the Mexican Government, because it was made to appear as the act of all done by order of the Political Chief of Brasos; hut J have had the greatest satisfaction today in reading the exposition which various Citiscns of that town directed to Col. Dn. Domingo de Ugarl11chea dated the 17th of last month in which they manifest explicitly their regret and disap- probation of that circumstance and renew their assurances of obedience to the Laws of the Republic. This conduct confers upon them at the same time, honor and security. As it is impossible that the aUack made upon the ~arrison of Anahuac should pass with impunity, J require, and I stimulate the patriotism of Your Honor to proceed immediately and without excuse to the apprehension of the ungrealful and bad cilisen, W. B. Travis who headed the revolutionary par I y; and lo cause him to be conducted to Bexar in the safest manner, and placed al the disposition of the principal commandant of the Stale, in order that he may be tried and punished according lo Law. I am informed the ahovc named Travis is an injury to those inhabitants, and it is a shame that the public authorities should in cold blood, be tolerating his excesses when he ought to have been punished Ion~ since. 1f Y. 1-1. and the good inhabitants of the Dcparlmcnl would give an uncquivocablc proof of their al laehmcnl lo public order, and desire never to he considered as eompromitled in the 011lra~co11s committed hy Travis it is necessary that they should. without hesitation, cast aside every motive of misplact'cl consiclera- tio11 or compassion, and proceed with the greatest activity and reserve, so that by the chaslismcnt of the dclic111•11t, no douhl may he enlcrlairwd of I.he good faith of thost·: who. in lht' midst of pcac~
