Some of lhe Citizens of Nacogdoches alive lo lhe true interests of Texas, and devoted lo its fair inslitutions held a meeting on Sunday July 19, .1835, al which Coln. Thorne was called lo lhe Chair, and Col. Thos. Rusk, Secy. after some deliberations on the present alarming slalc of affairs when a change is proposed in our form of Government and large bodies of Troops (as we hear) are landing at different points of our Coast, to enforce such change at the poinl of the bayonet, the l\'leeting unanimously adoplcd a resolution recommending lo the Political Chief to call a meeling of the Citizens of lhis District lhat measures may be adopted by all lo act in union with the people of other parls of the territory. The Meeting also appoinlcd a Committee ofVigilance consisting of five Individuals to wil John Forbes, Thomas Rusk, George Pollitt, Coln. Thorne and I. Logan. As Chairman of the· Committee I deem it my duty lo make you acquainted with these malters and lo assure you that notwithstanding the efforls of a few Tories here who are untiring in their efforts in misrepresenting matters and keeping back an expression of the peoples sentiments, the Red Landers will not be a whil behind the people of the Brazos and other parts of Texas in the maintainance of their Liberty and rights, and will stand by them shoulder lo shoulder in the defence of the Republican Institutions, and support of the laws of their adopted Country. It is of the utmost importance that a constant communication should be kept up between this place, St. Philippe de Austin, Bexar, and other points, throughout the Territory, perhaps you Sir could suggest some plan for regulating the mode of correspondence.
