Guadaloupe de Victoria, July 19th 1835. To His Excellency J. B. Miller, Chief of Department de los Brasos. Permit me to take the liberty of addressing you, although not pcrsonaly acquainted and not living in your department, but in the present [illegible] state of our state affairs, we must have some fountains for resource and direction, and inasmuch as our Chief of Department is not able to do much, however willing, the general current of opinions, seems lo look to you, as may be said as principal for guidance in the momenious question, that now must soon be determined, eith,~r by putting our necks in the yoke of military despotism, or bravely stand and defend our just rights; first in beyond doubt, _that Santa Anna is determined to try his fortune, by endeavouring to subdue Texas, as he has Lacadeaus, and despoil her also, it is true that Sant Anna, has not declared himself openly, but look to the acs of his minions, and particularly the principal one, General Cos, who has imprisoned our Governor and some of the members of the assembly, and holds them lo be trycd by a military tribuncral, as soon as one can be forn1t·<l, or as soon as they arc sure of · the reduction of Texas, Gerwral Cos has caused the authorities of Matamoras, Reynosa, Camargo, Mier & Revellia to declare for a central Government, and Sant Anna supreme dictator, as soon as he obtained this, he gave an order for a portion of the
