Dear Brollwr,
I expecl lo lt•avc here for home lhis week by way of Vera Cruz or Tampico unless I meel wilh company going by land in whid1 l'venl I would go lhal way, as the fever is generally bad on 1hr coast and in New Orleans so late in lhe summer. Evcrylhin:; is tranquil in this part of the counlry- Congrcss is lo meet in exlra session 011 the 19 of this month- There seems lo be no doubt that the system of Govl will be changed from federal lo central, tho it probably will be some monlhs before lhe new constitution can be framed and published There are many reports and falsehoods circulated here about Texas. I believe that the mosl of them originate with persons who wish lhe Govt to send the most of the army there, so as lo leave an open field for re\'olulion here, in Lhe absence of the army This has been a very hard trip upon me, but I anticipate a quiet life wilh you when I gel home Keep the children al school They ought to learn Spanish. ii will always be usefull lo them. Genl. Santana is al his hacienda near Vera Cruz S. F. Austin [To James F. Perry]
