the damages and prejudices occasioned by his arbitrary conduct. On ils side, the government of the undersigned is resolved to establish an enquiry into the conduct of captain Thompson, who will be examined in good faith and with a scrupulous altention, so as to leave no doubt of his guilt or innocence; and in the first case to punish him with all lhe rigor of the laws, and indemnify all who may have been injured by Thompson in his quality of commanding a Mexican ship of war. with great diffidence I will attempt this evening to write to you, these few & unworthy lines which I hope will be acceptable to you. I am welJ at present, and so is Wm Rodgers both of us are going to school at this place. The last time I heard from Home, I understood that they were all well, and that Mr. Harper was gone to Texas, with all His Family. There was a great Election here on the 7th 8th & 9th of this Month Col R. .M. Johnson and i\1. V. Buren were elected at Georgetown by a .Majority of 26. I would like to know the State of affiairs in that country, and if you should happen to See Mr. P. Harper, I would like to hear from him also. I would like to write to Him, if I knew where lo direct my Letters, Lieut. Jas. W. Henderson is here recruiting and expects to start from here in two or three weeks for that place. I Hope that the country which thou hast so Nobly defended, and upon whose plains thou hast been contending against Superior Numbers with surprising Success will ever be remembered & revered so long as virtue is honoured by a grateful People. unborn generations will talk of thy Name with Profound respect whilst the aspirant youth shall be panting after
