[November 7, 1835] The editor of this paper has just returned from on board the San Felipe, now stranded on the peninsula off Matagorda Bay, six or eight miles east of Pasco Villa. The Mexican armed schooner Montezuma, appeared off the Brazos on the 27th ult. and fired al the town, the fire was returned from the shore; so soon as she perceived that our cannon was equal or superior to hers, she made off; in the night she sailed down to the westward, close along shore, with the supposed intention of landing troops, in her boats. During the night of the 27th, an express arrived at Brazoria, for assistance, and all immediately flocked to the relief of our fellow citizens of Velasco. On the morning of the 28th, the Montezuma appeared off the bar sailing towards Galveston. Immediate preparations were made lo go out and attack her; accordingly the San Felipe was armed with seven cannon, and manned to the number of 70 including the crew, all efficient men, and on the l st inst. we were towed out hy the steam boat for that purpose; the steam boat was sent on a head to spy out and ascertain whether the Montezuma was in Galveston or not. Ascertained by that means that she was not in Galveston, we changed our course and steered for Matagorda; on nearing the pass on the evening of the 3d, we spyecl the Montezuma riding al anchor; the sea al the time running high, we were compelled lo wait a smoother sea, lo commence the attack,
