Vera Cruz Nov. 6, 1835 ... This country is in ~ bad situation. They have shut the port and allowed no vessels to leave for several days past. They have been embarking ammunition to Texas. They are (I am told) collecting troops in the interior likewise for Texas, and, if they send them, this part of the country will be worse off if possible, than it has been since they revolted from Spain. The North Americans are very much disliked, especially since Texas has taken the steps which she has. I have had some opportunity of knowing the character of this people, having been among them much; at one time I remained among them eight months....
