Mobile October 21st 1835
Gen! Houston Sir.
The struggle which is about lo ensue between the Mexican forces & the citizens of Texas, calls forth the warmest sympathies of every American towards his brethren & fellow-countrymen. Every lover of liberly, every opposer of Lyranny, injustice & despotism is willing to render some assistance to the Texians in their contest for freedom against the kneeling soldiers of Mexico's military despot. My best & most heartfelt wishes are for the final success of our oppressed countrymen against their base & traitorous invaders. The present unsettled state of Texas - together with its thin & sparse population, induces me to fear that you can have little or no Medical aid at this time when it is most needed. Having but a short Lime since procured my degree in the mosl ancient & honored instilution in our counlry & having no family lo encumber me I might be induced to offer any services as a Medical officer in the Texian armv was I better informed of the intentions - movements &c of the · existing authorities of that Colony - Being almost entirely ignorant of the auspices under which you commence Lhe war, I Lhink it wiser to wail _until I can receive more correcl information than I now possess - Should you deem my requesl worthy of allcntion, you will please wrile to me - It may be as well to tell who I am as that may afford some guarantees of my honesty &:c.
