[2331) [STUART to HOUSTON]
Fort Coffee 15th March 1836
Dear General
I had the pleasure to receive your letter of the 21st of November last with its accompaning papers about a month ago and have been waiting for an oppertunity to send a letter to you by private conveyance, but no such oppertunity offering, I have concluded to try the regular, but uncertain course of the mail- I am proud to hear that you have been called to fill so conspicuous a station in the service of Texas - and it is my strongest desire that personal prosperity may attend you wherever your destiny may throw you - I have your Rifle and will send it to you by the first safe oppertunity. Capt. Dodge brought it to me about a week ago, he has mended the old stock, not being able to make a new one - your dog is at Fort Gibson- Your particular friend near Fort Gibson was well the last accounts I had from there - Joseph Rogers died about two months since, and his Heirs are disputing about the distribution of his property - Major Flowers appears to be the most conspicuous in the matter. Things generally are going on in this country much as when you left it - Capt. W. Armstrong has been appointed to the station in the Indian department, left vacant by the death of his Brother - Capt. Nathon died on the last of December, and Lieuts. Kinney and Seaton a few days before him, - Mrs. McCleUain has moved to the .short mountain, and your other friends in this countTy are well. I will be at all times glad to hear from you, and hope that you will do me the favour to write to me when ever it is convenient with you to do so- A report has reached this country, that yourself and Col. Bowie, have both, from some whim of the authority of Texas been removed from office, but the report is not believed. Your friend truly, General Sam Houston John Stuart [2332) [URREA lo SANTA ANNA] (Jose Urrea, Refugio Mission, lo Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, March 15, 1836, reporting the engagement at the mission on the previous day.]
