Dear Sir
Some time ago I wrote you wishing to lay my name as a
candidate for Major of Artillery before the House-
you know & my qualifications & to write you a long rigmarole would be all fudge.-you can see these things too clearly for any one to attempt to deceive you as respects talents- I have here 120 men I have drilled them myself & a finer looking set of men I never want I have got the thanks of the Citizens for my strictness of discipline among them & "truly I do sometimes punish" -I shall leave here tomorrow with 4 pieces of cannon 110 inch Howitzer for the Army-but Col I do not like that men by nature intended for farmers & not soldiers & whom education has done nothing for put over me-
