The accompanying decree invests you with the command of this Post and its dependencies. It is obviously important to sustain this position, and every effort should be made lo do so. You will therefore immediately enter upon the duties of your command, and endeavor, by all proper means, lo secure the aid of the volunteers and citizens on the Island, and lo provide an increase of their numbers as fast as practicable. Any properly, on the Island, or within the limits of the depot, that would be useful in defending your Post, you may press into the public service, laking care, in every instance, to furnish the owner with a sufficient voucher for the same. The public stores you will use as occassion may require, and you wiU dispense them, as they may be wanted, to the vessels of War of the Republic that may visit the Post. Entertaining entire confidence in your zeal and abilities, I can only wish you may be enabled lo realise sufficient means to enable you to maintain a position that is of vast importance to our dear Country I am Sir Your Obt Servt David G Burnet.
