[2792) [GRIMES to BURNET]

April the 17th 1836

His Excellency David G Burnett Sir

A great many widows and women whose husbands are in the Army have been compelled to leave their homes and seek safety by retiring East of the Trinity River many of whom must certainly suffer if no provision is made for them. On reflecting upon the situation of these unfortunate families the following suggested itself to me "That is such families as are not in a situation to support themselves were requested to situate themselves in some two, three or more places and agents appointed to procure them provisions on the public credit whenever to be found. It would not only have the good effect to save them from starvation but it would admit many men to go to the army who would otherwise be compelled to remain with their families to procure for them a subsistence and it would induce some to join the Army so that their families might be taken care of. There are not more than three or four families remaining within twenty miles of me and I shall sound a retreat tomorrow morning. Very respectfully your obt Servt. Most Excellent Sir;

Due to the reports which I have gathered at this point, I have no doubts that the entitled General Houston who was at Groce's Crossing with a force of five to six hundred men, has moved towards Nacogdoches and should have left yesterday in that direction. However, since he is escorting families and supplies m ox-drawn wagons, his march is slow. The Trinity River,
