-[2785] [RUSK -to DIGGES]
War Department 16th April 1836
To Major Digges & Colin De Bland Gentlemen
You will proceed with as much despatch as possible to Robbins ferry on the trinity river. You will request of the companies of volunteers you may meet on their way to concentrate east of trinity except those you may meet on this side of trinity. They will he required to concentrate at head quarters the others will concentrate with as much despatch as possible east of trinity at the most proper and eligible situation to be judged by the officers they may elect to command them a force must be concentrated from the Red lands immediately the main force of the enemy are beyond a doubt moving towards Galveston and Anahuac, they may however send some portion of their forces towards the trinity, in order to effect a crossing Nacogdoches or to divide our present force their are men in the east, they must turn out if they do as they should the enemy cannot possibly cross trinity. I am decidedly of the opinion that a very few days will bring our armies into contact and I have no fear or doubts as to the result. The volunteers are required to furnish every convenience possible to the families. The strictest discipline and order must be preserved; orders will he issued as early as information can be had by the Department to justify it. You will keep the Department advised of all the information you may obtain; and report yourselves as early as possible. I have the honor to be with great respect Your obedient servant ·
