[2771) [GREEN to BURNET]

New Orleans Aprl. 15th 1836

To David G. Burnet Pres. of the Republic of Texas Dear Sir-

After filling up and sealing my despatches for your Government of two days since, & which has been delayed by the sailing of the Flora, we have the important news just received here from General Gaines at Ft. Jessup by despatch requiring Miss. & Tenn. to raise mounted men, in whose hands, U. S. arms will be placed at Ft. Jessup for the purpose of inforcing neutralities upon our borders. In the absence of Indian hostilities these men will be disbanded upon the spot - they will move as they like, East or West, part of my command is already up the road. Knowing much more than I can possibly commit down to paper I ask most respectfully by this despatch for authority to complete your army by giving encouragement. I have filled up my brigade by the first officers & men in the country. Some of whom will be speedily in the field. In the name of God, hold on and advise your commander not to instigate a bad fight. We will come to him in time. In haste yr humble servt and friend
