Col James Morgan Com of Galveston Galveston Island Dear Sir

Yours of the 20th inst. met me here this evening-I got Mrs B & her boys here for greater facility of embarkation, should it become necessary-What I shall do farther in that matter is uncertain-I return to Harrisburg tomorrow and if things go as I think they ought and might, I shall not feel disposed to send my family to the U.S. If the army "retreats" any farther I shall feel it my duth lo put "them" beyond danger-I could therefore whisn that the "Flash" would not leave too soon-for I have no doubt the enemy fully intends to occupy Galveston bay and the island as soon as possible. I very much regret the little incident between Col. P and yourself but I hope it will pass on both parts as a "small" matter-Your accounts ought to be liquidated and anything I can do towards it will be cheerfully done. Do make all possible haste in getting Your island in a defensible State-it wilI be necessary to plant some guns at the West and I think two or three at or opposite the Carandawa-All would be well located-but these are your matters-the eastern and first-Col Harcourt is quite destitute I am told-I believe he is a "very" valuable officer he ought to be decently supplied-I am writing on your little clothing bureau I have to sit "awry"-1\ly folks in your bung- Yours &e Burnet [On reverse:] It has been said with some "feeling" (there arc various finds of feeling among men) that Col M-has too much buying and trade ... he could not command al Galveston island- and spend half of the time at Newark We all have our enemies-Let us all do our "duty" & let enemies grumble as they may-
