Fort Jesup, April 13, (at night) 1836 Sir: I have come on to this place with all pos.5ible expedition to apprize you of the fact of a large assemblage of Indians on the Trinity, prepared for hostilities on the inhabitants between the Sabine and Nacogdoches, and the documents lo prove the facl I forwarded to you by express. At the same time, I sent a letter addressed to me on yesterday, from the commanding officer al Nacogdoches, staling that satisfactory information had been received that Lhis hostile party of savages, including Mexicans, had advanced to the Sabine, about sixty miles north of Nacogdoches, and were there encamped on Sunday last. This information was from one or more individuals of such unquestionable authority as to give entire credence to it, and induced every inhabitant of Nacogdoches lo abandon the town forthwith, leaving every thing behind them, and flying for their town forthwith, leaving every Lhing behind them, and flying for their lives. The expectation is that, at Lhis moment, Nacogdoches is occupied by the Indians and Mexicans; and, if they pursue the families on their night, all must be massacred, without instantaneous relief. I have given orders that the small force in Nacogdoches, of two hundred men, should form a barrier, to the last extremity, by taking to the trees, to give lime for the women and children lo make their escape; but learned subsequent to my departure, by express, that one hundred of the oerps retreated or fled; and that Judge Quitman, from Natchez, is endeavoring to form a rearguard.
