[Sam Houston, Orders, April 12, 1836, stating in part: "The Army under command of its respective officers will remove to the East side of the River so soon as practicable by Divisions passing the River. The first division of the first regiment will remain under Col. Burleson as the rear Guard, a horse Guard, of the army unlill further orders. We have received your communication on the subject of the retreat from this place. With great satisfaction we acknowledge your profferP.d kindness to protect the women and children, and we accept the same. The retreat will commence immediately, and your co-operation will be relied on.

Thompson's Tavern, April 12, (at night,) 1836. Sir: I left Nacogdoches yesterday, and am this far on my way to Fort Jesup. An express has this moment arrived with the enclosed document lo me, which I forward to you by the express, being unable to proceed further to-night. In the morning I shall continue my journey and be at the fort during the day; but there is no necessiiy for my presence to urge upon you the importance of !riving aid to the defenceless families which must fall a sacrifice to ~he Indians without your immediate succor. Thal the Indians arc in large force is certain, and the bearer can tell particulars. I enclose other papers for your examination.
