Nacogdoches April I I 1836
To The Committee of Vigilance & Safety Gentlemen,
I am given to understand through you that the citizens of their municipality or District of Nacogdoches have appointed me Military Commandant to act under the present emergency, and I subject to your orders. The duties imposed by this appointment are of a very responsible character and I should greatly have preferred that it had been conferred on another. I therefore shall expect and require a thorough cooperation; with which we may accomplish some good, but without which all efforts will be in vain. Upon you gentlemen of the Committee very high powers are confered, and as I am subject to your orders, I make every reliance on your councils, and the active aid of those who shall be called to assist me in the arduous duties imposed. With great respect & consideration, I have the honor to be your obt. st. John T. Mason (2717) [SESMA to SANTA ANNA] Primera division del ejercito de operaciones. - Escmo. Sr. - El Escmo.
