~n the return of the Steam Boal I calculate upon taking my family to Galveston Island where supplies can be easily obtained and my services wiU be as useful lo the country at that point as any where in the country. If you can confer any . appointment on me at that place I shall consider il a great favor as I can have my family with me and at the same time be serving my country. The Secretary of State, in reply to Mr. Gorostiza's note of the 10th inst. on the subject of the publication of the memorandum of the conference of the 20th of April, has the honor to inform him that the communication of the memorandum to a committee of Congress by the Department of War, was made without the knowledge of the Department of State. That the memorandum has not been published by any branch of this Government, but has been made known incidentally through the public journaJs as a part of the proceedings of Congress. How far, under these circumstances, a compliance with ~Ir. Gorostiza's request to have the correspondence which grew out of the memorandum of the 20th April, made known, is required by justice to Mexico, or her representative, is rendered unnecessary by the call which has just been made by the House of Representatives, including that correspondence, which call will be answered as soon as the papers can be prepared.
