Dios y libertad. Bejar 10 de Abril de 1836. - Juan Jose Andrade. - Sr. comisario general de los Departamentos de Nuevo Leon y Tamaulipas. [2686) [BAKER et al to HOUSTON] Camp oposite San Felipe April 10th 1836 At a consultation of the captains at this post held this evening to consider of the course to be pursued under present circumstances the following conclusion was agreed upon: 1st the Breast work and the ravine for Retreat is no longer tenable, for the reason that it is covered by the lower cannon of the Enemy. And no work at this time in our power can protect them. 2nd We are now nearly surrounded by water and every prospect of being inundated and no way of retreat left except by the Road, & one half of our whole force is continually standing guard. 3rd Our force is about 85 strong and the Enemy probably about 1200. 4th We have no position on the river to fight from without being exposed to the whole of the cannon. Wherefore we advise that the companies fall back to Iron's Creek & then fortify and make all suitable preparations for fighting the Enemy through the swamp to the creek and to resist them at that crossing at all hazards.
