[2679) [STAPP to BURNET]

Trinity April 9th 1836

His Excellency D. G. Burnet D Sir

having been informed that J J Linn is now in Harrisburg taken there as a Spy for the enemy; -and my having been acquainted with Linn 5 or six years and having had several conversations with him on the political situation of our country I have ever found him the warm friend to the cause of Texas (towit) at the first meeting of the precenct of Lavaca before the taking of La Bahia J. Linn addressed us a letter entreating us not to be deceived in Santana movements against Texas that the sale of the public lands (viz), 300 League & 400 Leagues was not the prime cause. But that Centralism was his object the yoke of tyranny we must weare or be driven out of the Country; again he furnished horses for young men to wride in the service last faul it is also well known that he rendered consideral service last faul in the army he was also in the attack made on Lepantaclan and acted not only brave but as a warm friend to his country P.S I further recollect that J J Linn was at this meeting and urged the immediate raising of Voluntiers to go and cut off coss before he reached La Bahia and if that could not be done in time to try to cut him off before he reached Sanantonio. ES- [2680] [TORNEL to the PUBLIC] D. G. Burnet Esqr. Yours Respectfully Elijah Stapp [Jose Maria Tomei, Mexico, to the Public, April 9, 1836, promulgating a decree authorizing the confiscation of the property of those promoting the rebellion in Texas.]
