and quality of provisions furnished and the Superintendant will furnish the treasury Department with duplicates of such reports, The person or persons appointed lo provide timber will be cautious not to cut down destroy impair the trees in or adjacent tothe Camp. They will procure their wood and timber on the opposite sideof the Bayou, excepting such as may he had on this side, without impairing the shade necessary to the salubrity of the encampment. Sir: It has been represented to this Department that a volunteer company is in the act of being raised and equipped, at Nashville, for military service in Texas. This also appears from an article quoted, as having been published in the Kentucky Gazette. You are requested to satisfy yourself, by proper inquiries, as to the truth of this representation, and should you find that any persons have, in regard to the transaction alluded to, violated the laws, you will institute such proceedings as may be necessary to bring them to punishment. Enclosed is the copy of a letter, addressed on a similar occasion to your late predecessor, Mr. Brown.
