The rest of the tToop will remain encamped in front of this place, in a suitable location, until receiving further orders from me. If the opportunity should arise, even though it might be necessary to march 10 or 12 leagues, for this operation is one of the most essential which I recommend to the wise judgment and activity of General Vicente Filisola, since the objective of the army is none other than lo destroy the armed masses that are warring against the Nation in the territory of Texas. As tomorrow I march for Columbia and Brazoria, I should be looked for in one of those two places, when a message is sent me advising me of the crossing of the river, or when the movements of the enemy are communicated to me or news of whatever events are relayed to me. For God and Liberty. General Headquarters of San Felipe de Austin, April 8, 1836. Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana. [2658) [THOMAS to HOUSTON]
War Department Harrisburg April 8th 1836
To Genl Sam Houston Commander in Chief of the Army of the Republic of Texas Sirs
Information has been presented to the President by respect- able persons that a certain John Chaffin is about Columbia representing himself in officer pressing horses and acting as a general agent of the Government, calculated to give great dissatis- faction to many persons, he is not known here as an officer nor to any one of the Government officers personally, his conduct has been represented in a very infavorable light. I am requested to say to you that if he is acting under an authority from you that you order him to the camp and place some other person there who will act with more discretion, if not to have him arrested and tried, he is a man that I know nothing of. I would not attempt to act without being satisfied whether he had any authority from you as there is no disposition to interfere with any orders emanating from you except through yourself.
