ofthcir private affairs and future prospects in life. l\lost men, situated as the agents arc, would, 011 receiving such intelligancc as they received by Genl. Green yesterday, have considered the Govt. as utterly faithless and the case a hopeless 011e: But when the first shock passed off and reflection resumed her Empire, they came to the determination of using all their own means and exertions to sustain the public credit untill the new administration can be made fully acquainted with the facts of the case, at the hazard of total ruin to themsel\'es, in the hope that so soon as the present Govt shall be fully possessed of the whole matter, they may receive that notice and support to which their services and devotion to the cause entitle them. It would be superfluous to urge upon you Sir the vital importance to a community of scanty resources, of protecting most scrupulously the public credit and public faith. Long experience in fiscal matters & in South American & .Mexican negotiations at the commencement of those Governments have made me very sensitive to the frightfull consequences of a breach of public faith and consequent loss of public credit to a people struggling against fearfull odds for their existence. I have the hons to subscribe myself Sir your fellow citizen & obt servant Henry Austin Note. The letter of l\fr. l\kKinney refered to will be found in the dispatchs of the Gen. agent by this conveyance. [2613) [BROWN to MORGAN] Galveston Harbor Apl 7th 1836 Sir.
