To the President and his associates in authority the legitimate Government of Texas

The petition of the undersigned respectfully sheweth that he visited this province in the summer of 1835 with a view of becoming a citizen of the Country with the expectation of receiving a grant for a certain quantity of land to which he was entitled under the colonization laws; and in pursuance of this purpose he paid one of the public surveyors of Austins Colony the required fee for running a League of land hut before the necessary record could be made the Council of Texas assembled at San Fillipe ordered the land offices to be closed so that your petitioner was deprived of the opportunity of securing titles to the land to which he feels himself legitimately entitled. Immediately after this act your petitioner was called by business to the United States whither he repaired in haste and has now returned to this province lo participate in the dangers that threaten it and to aid in its defence, and by virtue of these facts he claims a League of land as a citizen of the Country prior to the suspension of the land offices, ·and prays that the officers of Government ,vill issue such an order as will enable him to locate and secure titles to the same. Your petitioner asks nothing but what he considers himself fairly entitled to by virtue of the laws of force when he came into the Country, he asks nothing of gratuity; and for whatever services he may be enabled to render the Country, he requires no compensation other than the reflection that he may have done some little good lo the cause of liberty and free government; he is a widower with one child, very limited in his fortune, and as he hopes shortly to mingle in battle with the foes of
