[2593) [BENTON et al to BURNET]

Nacogdoches April 6th 1836

To His Excellency David G Burnet President of the Republic of Texas Sir

The Citizens of this section of Country, in conjunction with many in Military service, have strongly expressed the opinion that under the present exigencies of the Country the most eligible place for the seat of Government is Nacogdoches, and the committee of vigilence and safety have been made the Organ through which to communicate this sentiment, and to invite you and all the officers of the Government to make this your temporary residence. They perform this duty the more readily, as they are fully satisfied of the propriety of the measure. No place in the Country is more healthy at all seasons, and none can afford better accomodations nor more ample suplies. But the certain, safe and speedy communication which the Government would have here with the U. States, as well as with the Army, is a consideration paramount to all others. Those wishing to communicate with the Government must hereafter always take this rout from the U States, the one by sea, being too precarious, and the time consumed in going to Harrisburg and back is serious in its consequences, an evidence of which is lo be found here at this moment, in the fact a Gentleman from Tennessee with dispatches from Gen! Dunlap is unable to reach you. In the Summer months Harrisburg and the Country about it is not considered healthy, and strangers would feel some apprehension in visiting you there on that account. Besides it appears to us that in the progress of the war, you may be cut off from communication with the Army. That they must rally in the woodlands is obvious, and in so doing they approach us and become more remote from your present position. In these suggestions we have no motive other than the general good, and arc satisfied that in this light the measure would be considered by the inhabitants of the lower country. Should you think it advisable to accept our invitation, we give you the assurance of a cordial reception, and will Lake steps lo provide for your accommodation, if it be your pleasure to desire it
