Camp near Fort Bend April 5, 1836

Genl. S. Houston My dear sir

This will be accompanied with my resignation, a measure which I am compelled reluctantly to adopt from the present state of my heallh. I have not enjoyed a single day's health since I left Tuscaloosa about the middle of February. I am now so severely salivated that I can scarcely speak-and I hope that you will take into consideration the fact that I have been constantly in the service since the 1st October when I left for Gonzales; under these considerations I hope you will make out for me a discharge such as you may think that. I deserve, and forward itto Harrisburg. I only enlisted Twenty-one men in the United States, which was not such bad business when you reflect that only the sum of $150 was advanced me by the commissioners, and that I was sent to Alabama. The amount expended in bringing these men to New Orleans was $450, besides other necessary expenses. I would lake the liberty of recommending to your attention, the bearer Mr. Foard, Mr. Brewster and Mr. Mitchell, all young men of the first families in the country from which they came; they are members of my company. I hope my conduct will meet your full approbation, which it has ever been my ambition to merit. I shall join you as soon as I shall have recovered health, as a volunteer.

I remain dear sir with sentiments of Respect Your Obt Ambl Svt. M. W. Smith
