My dear Sir I find l\'lessr. L & D have not collected the insurance on the Empress & it is useless to propose a Settlement until he has, I have reason to believe he has never tries to get it At Zacharies I found the papers would-not bear out the Claim but Mr West Prin. of the Insurance company told me a letter stating amot of Invoice the manner of the loss & that you had done all you would have done in your own case to Save the properly would be Sufficient to induce him to aUow the loss, without papers - or that a letter from Mr Andrews Staling the amot invoice with particulars of proceeds of damage Sale & that the loss was a fair one would be Sufficient I write to Andrews on the subject, let me have both replys by first op'py that I may attend to it wliilest here- There is no lat accts · from the Commissrs I have not attempted to do anything as yet - The unfavorable news which came with me The neglect to ratify the loan, or to place the funds in bank (10,000$) at the disposition of the agent who is in advance 8000$ cash & 90,000$ credit, together with the Pressure for Money, consequent upon Santa Anas sloping the shipments of Spice from the Mexican ports to New Orleans has so depress'd Texas credit, that I have determined to lay upon my oars for the moving of the waters, until some favorable accts from Texas revive hopes here- My best remembrances to Emily. & believe me always Your friend & Obdt Servt H.
