At the same time he is compelled to assure the army that it is an exception to the general rule, which is resolved lo preserve-Subordination can only be maintained by a strict observance of the rules and articles of War. This being the first instance is directed as an admonition, the next must be an example. The man who abandons his post is more dangerous to the security of the army than twenty out of our lines.-The Salvation of the whole army may depend upon the conduct of one man the responsibility is important, the punishment for delinquency must be proportional to the fault of the individual.-

Col. Robert Triplett, Sir-

Permit me lo introduce to your acquaintance, Capt. B. F. Bradford, who has been sometime in the service of Texas, and has claims upon the attention of the Republic. Capt Bradford intends to return to the State of Kentucky, with an object to raise a corps of marines, should the Government at any time desire the services of a corps of that description. At present, the Government is not prepared to give Capt. B. such assurances as might meet with his views on his arrival in the U.S. and by the time he can ascertain whether he can realize his views. As you will be in Kentucky as an acting agent of this Government, any assurance you may give Capt. Dradford will be recognized by the Government. We confide in your knowledge and on the information you may receive from time to time of the condi lion of the country. I am with great respect, yours &
