To Nathani~l Armory Esq. Sir

By these presents your services are accepted as a vohmteer and you are appointed Secretary of the Commander in Chief of the Army of Texas as well as Translator of the Mexican language. You will resume such compensation and payments as are now or may be hereafter allotted by law.

[-- March, 1836] Let Maj. Smith purchase the· oxen. By no means, nor under any circumstances let either Liquor or cards be brought to camp nor within ten miles of it. Nor are any playing cards to be introduced into any Camp, nor at any post. Nor Card playing to be allowed. Let a General order to this effect be made out, so soon as pos.c;ible, and when made, a copy must be sent to the army, to each station, military Post &c in Texas. In reply to your inquiries, I went to the Tavern as soon as I understood the stage had arrived with passengers from Texas, and found Col. Thomas K. Hill of Columbia, surrounded by a crowd, all asking after friends etc. I passed through to him and got an introduction and asked him if he knew Maj. Autry personally; he
