sympathies; the liberals throughout the world would have paused in their bright career of freedom lo enquire of themselves if they were not contending for an unreal phantom on beholding the decendants of the heroes of the American revolution quail before a despot, and sink into submission without a struggle; the holy allies, those regal advocates of legitimacy, would have held it up with complacency to the world as a new circumstance in proof of the divine rights of kings and of the erroneousness and pernicious influence of Lhe principles brought into action by that revolution; whilst the shade of the immortal Washington would have been perpetually before us to rebuke us for our degeneracy. No, sir, they have not submitted; they will never submit; and there is not one true Texian who has nol nerved his soul to the high resolve of Liberty or Death. They have done what their honor, the spirit of the age, and the laws of nature and of God required they should do. They have declared a total separation from Mexico and from despotism, and they have taken their station among the nations of the earth: A numerous and invading army is now upon our borders and the war has been declared to be one of extermination. The sincerity of this declaration has recently been evinced by their acts. A party of about thirly men were surprised a short time since . by the centralists, a·nd all who fell into their hands were massacred; and the Garrison at San Antonio consisting of 187 men was surrounded in the fort of the Alamo by a numerous and overwhelming force, under the command of the President General Santa Anna in person, and after a bloody engagement in which about six hundred of the enemy were slain, the fort was carried by storm, but the valiant band defended themselves with desperate resolution until they were all hewed down but seven men who cried out for quarter from the General, and who were ordered by him to be put to death and burnt as hereties, which was emmediately executed, one being murdered in his sick bed. Brave, chivalrous, heroic, patriotic band! ye sleep in death but "still are free." Your names shall be inscribed in the proudest and the brightest pages of history with those of Leonidas, Warren and others who have offered themselves as sacrifices upon the altar of their country. The foundation of the temple of liberty and independence about to be erected by your fellow-citizens, have i)cen laid deep by you, and the corner stone rests upon your
