New Orleans March 27th 1836

Col. J. Fanning Jr. Dr Friend

I arrived here designing to raise men for our service, and have applied to our agent Wm. Bryan Esqr. for funds, but he has not a dollar I was therefore thrown on my own resources, and ·with some difficulty have suceeded in getting a small amount 10,000$ - but if there was 30,000$ more to be disposed of 3000 men could be raised for Texas in 40 days. The credit of Texas is suffering for a small amount of money to pay bills that are becomeing due and unless the funds are shortly ordered to be drawn our credit will be nearly ruined here, The public feelings are highly in our favor plenty of volunteers are daily offering but ten thousand dollars wont go far as we have now to pay cash for every thing where as was the agency to receive 30,000$ to pay a part of our debts the credit would be unlimited. I shall send pr Sehr. Wm. A. Turner about 50 men in 5 days. The antissipated war with France is at an end & the Indian war in Florida is over. I shall immediately proceed to the seat of war in Florida & endeavor to send out from 350 to 500 men but if there was money then more than Texas would want can be obtained. We expect the arrival of a Steam Ship from New York daily armed for Texas & i\'lr. Sarni. M. Williams is arranging a strong tow Boal for our coast mounting 18 & 24 lb. guns - a boat like that is worth any 3 vessels we now have. Capl. Logan is here & will leave for Texas first opportunity his men 91 in number are now on their march from Nacogdoches to camp. Col. Owings is now on his march with 1400 men left Maysville 12th this armed principally with U. S. Yagcrs. l\ly
