I
the start of the other passengers and came across a gentleman from Missouri with a fine large horse 4 years old which I bought for $115. I am told by gentleman just in from Texas that 1 can gel him there for $250. I have fallen in line with Sgr. Menefee on his return from Texas. Also with Thomas Bass & Andrew Armstrong: they have accidentally met at this place but have not seen each other on their tour to Texas. They all give a most enthusiastic description of the country; but are afraid of its political situation: and consequently have not bought; but are determined to do it as soon as possible. My own opinion of the country is the same, In fact I am clearly of the opinion now is the time to vest money & make large fortunes: the present crisis has alarmed the timid and will know some of the finest land in the country in the market for little or nothing I am determined to keep cool, look as far ahead as possible, and allow myself time to become as intimately acquainted with the country, titles &C before I vest my money as my situation will allow which may ultimately be the cause of my remaining some longer than I should otherwise have done. Kirkman & Roper have given me leave to draw on them for such an amount as I mentioned ($3000. Wm B. Merrell has also requested me to purchase some lands for him and given me leave to draw for the same. I could have bought on the money but did not wish to run the risk of robbery. &C && Mr. Bass takes passage in the morning in the Caspian by way of "New Orleans, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Courtland and will be the bearer of this and has promised to forward it on as early as possible. You all shall continue to hear from me from time as I progress. I learn that the United States mail goes as far as Fort Jessup, and that the Texian mail comes over & takes it from that place to any part of Texas. In all future communications unless othenvise directed. direct to Washington Texas by way of Natchitoches Louisiana Mr Childress of the Texian convention is now in the room & has just read the declaration of Independence of Texas He is on his way to Washington City to solicit the recognition of the lndependance of Texas by the United States Col. Wm B Logan of Texas Col. Waterson Sgt. Denham & Mr. Cartwright are rooming with me & expect to accompany me on to Texas. This l\'lr. Cartwright is a merchant in San Augustine & has made me a present of a Spanish saddle at this place. My heal Lh is certainly better than when I left home & hope it will continue to
