General Post Office San Felipe March 26th 1836
Gentlemen
In looking for the ferryman to put me over the Brazos, on my way to Harrisburg, I was met by Mr. Gay who has acted with me as a member of the Committee of Safety &c, at this place, who with other gentlemen then present advised me that if I left this place at all it ought to be for the army, that for several reasons they beleived there were spies in the place-that daily communications from the Genl. under the circumstances were important-My family in their situation ought not to be left &c &c In the greatest Respectfully Yours Jno. ll. Jones [addressed:] The President & Cabinet Harrisburg

Dear Sir
The Steam Boat never reached this until to day about 5 oclock, I had an interview with the owner immediately & proposed a negotiation for her, for the use of the Govt. But it seems she is already in that employ! Yes employed by the Govt & has been for the last 2 months. This of course cut short my negotiation & I went to work to put up the articles, ordered by yourself and others at Hsburg to go up in her, when she arrives arrangements can be, made, I presume, in what way the Govt. will further employ her, as there will be no further use for a floating Custom Housel-At present at least. In case any thing should turn up by which she cant be had to go down to unload the vessel with stores expected in, I shall be prepared with a Boat at Galveston to discharge the cargo & store it until an opportunity offers of sending them round to such places as they may be needed at. The little Sioop exchange is quite a convenient Boal for that purpose until the Govt. can procure a -Steam Boat. One can be purchased to answer every purpose in N. Orleans for a small amt. My Sehr.
