Mr. Gritton is the hearer of a piece entitled, "An appeal to the people of the U. S. of the North, from the distressed widows, wives and families of Texas," which was drawn up al the instance of several respectable persons for circulation in the States, and is now sent lo you for your approval and action. The families of our Country will be reduced to great want this year, and it has been deemed necessary to apply to the parent State for succor. "appeal" will not be published here as it might have a bad effect. I will say no more on the subject, conceiving as I do, that you wll duly appreciate my motives for stating it, and that your administration will be as much distinguished by a fraternal care of the people placed under your charge, as well as by your efforts to protect them from the enemy.

[BURNET to BATTERSON]
Mr. Isaac Batterson Sir
You are hereby authorized and requested to take charge of the flat boat now lying at the crossing of Simms' bayou and to keep and employ her as a ferry boat, at the mouth of that bayou. And you are directed to cause a sufficient road, for the passage of waggons, to be opened, to the bayou on either side of it, to connect with the old road from this point to the crossing of the San Jacinto. While you are engaged in conducting this ferry you will be exempted from militia duty. You will notify the Government of your acceptance of this order; and as soon as the
