[2415) [MORGAN to --------]
New Washington Thursday 8Oclock-March 24th 1836
Dear Sir
I am in receipt of yours of yesterdays date this moment to hand-and hasten to reply, The Boy, Vince, had gone to the army when I reached his Fathers Home, Horses I can get none more than you know of so far, but have sent over on the Trinity for ten-I may get some five or six, I think shall send another express for them to day. But inhabitants over there & around the Bay, on the east side, are so alarmed-so panic struck that they are flying in every direction-those who cant get off by land are pushing off in Boats most of the horses then are in great demand and I fear we shall find difficulty in obtaining what will be requisite for the use of the government-no stone will be left unturned by me however to procure them. The steam boat is yet below. Probably at the Island If she does not get up to day I will dispatch a Boat, or my Schooner up with the articles ordered. I found on my return home nearly all my provisions sold out-Flour all gone but one or two Bbl. and all my good Liquors-However I will send all I can spare of my own private stores, which I hope will do, until more arrives I am hourly looking for my large Schooner. if she has not gone elsewhere will be in this week probably, But, my small Schooner shall be dispatches forthwith to N Orleans for supplies as soon as I receive Govt. orders-The delay of the cabinet in reaching Hsburg causes me to alter my arrangements I was at a loss to conjecture what was the matter & as I was determined to lend my feeble aid in every & any way the Govt should most require it, commenced preparing with my musket for the army in person. I fitted out one expedition of seven men yesterday (some noble fellows among them too) and in three days more shall have followed with seven or eight more; but if I can be of more service elsewhere than in the army, I can remain behind Galveston ought to be fortified & that without delay-If the Mexicans once get a foot hold then I will be had to dislodge them, & leave this part of the Country quite at their mercy-But as nearly 5/6ths of the inhabitants have left. 1 dont see where we can now find hands lo work. there are some men who cannot get to the army & some who are clear of .Militia
