If you could secure Lhe Services of even a few confidential men of Lhe Shawnee tribe or any other personally Known to you to act as scouts, it would be a valuably acquisition lo our forces. But they must be men on whose fidelity the utmost reliance may be placed. You will receive instructions of a strictly confidential nature from the War Department to which I doubt not your zealous attention will be given-

Executive Department Republic of Texas March 19th 1836 To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting: Know ye that reposing special trust and confidence in the honor, patriotism, fidelity and abilities of George C Childress Esqr., I David G. Burnet, President of the Republic of Texas, have nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of my Cabinet, and in pursuance of authority vested in me by law, have appointed and constituted, and by these presents do appoint and constitute the said George C Childress Esqr, in conjunction with Robert Hamilton Esqr. my special Agent, with plenary powers, to open a negotiation with the Cabinet of Washington, touching the political rights of this Republic; inviting on the part of the Cabinet, a recognition of the Sovreignty and Independence of Texas, and the establishment of such relations, between the two Governments, as may conport with the mutual interest, the common origin and kindred ties of their constituents: And the said George C Childress Esqr, is hereby aut_horized and instructed, in conjunction with the said Robert Hamilton Esqr., to do and perform all those matters and things and full faith and credit is hereby pledged lo all engagements he may make, appertaining to the accomplishment of the objects of this Commission.
