Executive Department of the Republic of Texas. Washington 18th March 1836

To The People in Eastern Texas.

Gen. Houston is at his post on the frontier with eight hundred men and reinforcements constantly arriving. Our army is in high spirits and full of confidence, Yet in the midst of the security which this state of things should inspire. The officers .of Government are surprised and grieved to learn, that a portion of the people of Eastern Texas, under the influence of idle and groundless rumours are leaving their homes and by the circulation of false news may prevent others of their countrymen from refraining to the standard of their country, where alon~ their homes and families are to be defended, under these circumstances I have thought proper to issue this my proclamation to the people of Texas, calling upon them to organize themselves under the laws of their country. I conjure you my countrymen lo repair to the field forthwith to deafen your ears against all mmours from whatever quarter they may come. The officers of your Government will take special care to obtain necessary information of the movements of the enemy and our own army, and keep their
