Washington 17th March 1836

Sir

Being desirous of rendering some service to the cause of Texas, I have been induced to ask of your Excellency the Commission of first Lieutenant in the Regular Army of Texas with instructions to recruit as many soldiers as I conveniently can, and would also ask of you a passport to leave the Republic for a short time, as I have to about on business to the U.S. for a few weeks, and while there may possibly be of some service to the cause.
