Messrs S. F. Austin 13. T. Archer W H Wharton Commissioners &c. Gentlemen
Having located myself at the Bay of Galveston in Texas, where I intend to take up my residence being a citizen of Texas, and of course warmly and ardently sumpathizing in her present struggle and extremely solicitious for her future success I feel it not only my duty but a privilege to make personal sacrifice for the public welfare and am wilJing to offer my service where I can be most useful to the country of my adoption. By profcssion I am a· councellor at Law, and am tolerably well acquainted with tl,e acts and pursuits of a nation at Peace, But I feel myself unfit for any military station of command being totally ignorant of military tactics and discipline. I believe however that I can be of more service to the country in providing and supplying the means of defence and munitions of war, than I should be as a private soldier in the ranks of the regular army. As the Government will no doubt find it necessary to Establish a military and navaJ station at the Island of Galveston I would respectfully solicit the appointment of commissary to that station believing that my extensive acquaintance al the city of New York and other important places in the United Stales will give me peculiar facilities in fulfiling the duties of that office to the advantage of the government Should my proposal meet with your approbation I should feel very gratd11l to you for such recommendation lo the gowrnor
