[2198] [WHARTON to CITIZENS]
San Felipe, Feb. 28th 1836
To the Citizens of Brazoria:
I send you by Express, the latest information from San Antonio, the Governor's call, and the proceedings of the meeting at San Felipe: from these you will learn, the necessity for your services, the call that is made upon you, and upon what your fellow citizens in this place are doing. I know that you will not be backward in affording your country the assistance that she demands. I advise all that live in the upper part of the Jurisdiction who can procure horses, to leave immediately for Gonzales, the remainder rendezvous at Velasco, on the 8th proximo; at which place and time I have engaged Capt. Grayson to be ready with the steam boat Laura, to transport all who are disposed to assist their country to the westward. I consider it unnecessary to make appeal to your patriotism, as the information from Bexar, speaks louder than words.
John A. Wharton, Adjutant General.

[BARRETT to GOVERNOR AND COUNCIL]
Feb 29 1836
To the Governor and Council My Friends
I must say that I am surprised at your timidity and want of decision at this Juncture in refusing to send an agent over to the U. S. as I proposed If you have any objection to myself in Gods name, send, some other person, there should not be a moments delay, men and means are wanted at once and must be had or the country is lost. I shall wait four or five days longer to hear from you on this Subject The council must if possible get into a Quorum and push ahead. I presume the convention will give the Pro. Gvt. an impetus by a public sanction This should be attended to In haste as ever, Yours &c. D. C. Barrett
