[To Editor of Red River Herald:] [Nacogdoches, February18,1836] '\vith some surprize, I have understood that a report is now in circulation, that the volunteers from the United Stales, lately stationed at the mission of Refugio, had refused to submit to the command of Gen. Houston. The report is utterly without foundation. The troops marched under the orders of General Houston, from Goliad to Refugio. And upon the arrival of Mr. Johnson, upon the second evening after their encampment, bearing the resolutions passed by the council, or a part of them. Gen. Houston returned to St. Philippe on the night succeeding, for the purpose of reporting to the Governor, as the only office he could recognise. No doubt can be entertained, but that a great portion of the volunteers would immediately disband, had they known of the departure of their General. This General Houston wished to avoid, as he would not countenance insubordination in any form, or under any circumatance. He therefore left the post at night, and without their knowledge of the time he would leave. An Indian treaty was also to be held, which required the immediate attention of General Houston, as one of the commissioners. In truth, this should have been a primary object with the council, and the General was preparing to accomplish it at the time orders were received from St. Philippe, to repair to the command of the army. General Houston will repair to the command, and sustain the volunteers, with whom he will put his life in the defence of Texas. Feelings of duty to his country predominate with him, and he cannot be restrained from acting as they dictate.
