Consulate of the U.S.A., Matamoras, February 18, 1836. Sir: In reply to your note of last evening, I cannot withhold the expression of my profound astonishment that any member of my family should have been suspected of visiting Texas at the present time. The accusation must have been fabricated by some malicious person for the purpose of mischief or the gratification of more unworthy feelings. The charge alleged against my son, that he was detected in the act of selling out for that country, is wholly destitute of truth, and without the least shadow of foundation.
